It turns out that Unicode designates certain characters as preferred emoji.
I mostly don't like this because it interferes with styling.
The answer to this (except on Google Chrome for Mobile) is to add a prefer-text selector, Unicode U+FE0E.

* Update 2023-09-16: Thanks to Brian Slesinsky for noting that Google Chrome for Mobile does not appear to honor the non-emoji selector; I confirmed that it fails for me. Maybe I can fix it in CSS?
